    Access

    Q: I can not access my account. What can I do?
    A: METU students and members can access their Library account with the username and password they use in their METUMail account. Users with protocol can access their METU Library account with their name, surname, and the number on their library card.

    Q: I'm not a METU member. May I use the METU Library collection?
    A: After bringing an entry form describing you need to use METU Library resources for a research purpose to the Domestic Services Office, you will be free to use all printed and electronic collections in the Library by coming here. You can take photocopy from books and periodicals but you can not borrow any materials.

    Q: Is it possible to access to online databases and e-journals outside the campus?
    A: METU students and personnel can access to online databases and e-journals outside the campus by following the instructions at Remote Access page.

    Q: When I try to access to an e-journal in the campus, user name and password is asked. Why?
    A: Any journal registered by the METU Library can be accessed in the campus without any password. If a password is being asked during in campus access, the problem might be due to some online error or the publishing company's fault. Please inform us by e-mail for related problems.

    Q: May I use the Library after graduating?
    A: METU Alumni is free to use all printed and electronic materials in the Library and to take photocopy from books and periodicals but can not borrow any materials.


    Borrowing & Renewals

    Q: How many books can I borrow at a time?
    A: METU academic staff and Phd students may borrow up to 25 books for 30 days; graduate students may borrow 20 books for 30 days; students may borrow up to 15 books for 15 days; administrative staff may borrow up to 15 books for 30 days; retired academic staff may borrow 15 books for 30 days; retired administrative staff may borrow up to 5 books for 30 days. Members must show their ID cards in the borrowing process.

    Q: Where shall I return the books I've borrowed?
    A: Books must be returned where they were checked out. (Circulation Desk, Reserve Desk, Muhan Soysal Library, North Cyprus Campus Library, etc.)

    Q: How do I know the due dates of my books?
    A: You can view your library account online through the Library's website. Click on the My Record and enter your name and barcode number to see which books you have out on loan and when they are due back. You can also view your fines and books on hold there.

    Q: How can I renew book loans without coming to the Library?
    A: 

    Long loan period circulated books can be renewed online via My Record . A reminder notice will be e-mailed to you 3 days before your books are overdue. Notices are e-mailed to your  METUMail address. Please check your e-mails every day! Full details...

    Reasons why your renewal may not be successful:
    • Another patron has a request (hold) on the item.
    • There may be 5 TL or more outstanding fines on your account.
    • There may be overdue item(s) on your account. All overdue item(s)
    must be returned to the Library, first.
    • Your registraion may be expired.

    WARNING! Please don't forget to check your e-mail notices every day! Failure to receive a notice does not excuse you from paying overdue fines.



    Q: How do I hold a book which is checked out?
    A: If you would like to borrow a book checked out by another user, you can click on "Request" button and follow the prompts to request it. When a requested book returns to the Library, it will get the status "on hold", and will be kept for you up to 3 days at the hold shelf in the Circulation Desk. Please wait for an e-mail notice to arrive before coming to the Library to pick up your holds. Full details

    Q: What kind of library notices are sent to patrons?
    A: The Library sends notices to patrons alerting them for overdue books, reminder or hold availability. Notices are sent to the users' METUMail addresses. Users must notify the Library about any changes on their e-mail account. Failure to receive a notice does not excuse you from paying overdue fines.

    • Reminder notices: Reminder notices are e-mailed to the users 3 days before the books are overdue. Notification of items that will soon be due for renewal or return.

    • Overdue notices: Overdue notices are e-mailed 1 day after your books became overdue.

    • Hold awaiting notices : When a requested book has been returned to the Library, it will get the status "on hold", and will be kept for you up to 3 days at the hold shelf in the Circulation Desk.

    WARNING! Please don't forget to check your e-mail notices every day! Failure to receive a notice does not excuse you from paying overdue fines.


    Q: Can I see all items that I have borrowed from Library till now?
    A: You can check the items that are currently out on loan and keep a record of books borrowed and returned in the past. Go to My Record and click on the "My Reading History".

    ODTU Library has a special protocol (Inter-University Loan) with Ankara University, Ankara Social Science University, Atılım University, Baskent University, Bilkent University, Çankaya University, Gazi University, Hacettepe University, TED University, TOBB Economics and Technology University libraries, Turkish Aeronautical Association University, Yildirim Beyazit University and MTA, Turkish Court of Accounts, TODAIE libraries to allow faculties borrow books, reciprocally. If you are working on this universities or institutions you should bring us the protocol form in person. Maximum 5 books can be borrowed for 30 days per reader, and maximum 25 books can be borrowed per university/institution from ODTU Library. Books may be renewed 1 time.

    If you are working other universities the above one’s should apply to the ILL librarian in their library. If the library is a member of ANKOS, the ILL librarian sends the borrowing request via KİTS (Interlibrary Loan Tracking System); if the library is not a member of ANKOS, the ILL librarian sends the borrowing request by filling the ILL Book Request Form. Maximum 3 books can be borrowed for 30 days per reader, and maximum 25 books can be borrowed per university/institution from ODTU Library. Books may be renewed 1 time.     Q: How can I use a carrel?
    A: 24 carrels (small lockable study rooms) are available on the first, second, and third floors of the Library and can be used only by METU academic staff and graduate & doctoral students.     Q: Can I borrow periodicals?
    A: The periodicals located in the Current Periodicals Hall are not for loan but articles can be photocopied. The periodicals in the Bound Periodicals Hall and the Journal Stacks are only loaned, for 7 days, to master’s and PhD students and academic staff.

    Q: I'm new to the University. Can I borrow books?
    A: All registered students can borrow books with their METU ID card.

    Q: I am a METU member. I want to borrow a book not available in the METU Library's collection. What shall I do?
    A:

    If you are a ODTU academic member and does not have the book you're looking for in our library, but you find them in other libraries which are we signed protocol with universities or institutions you should apply ODTU Library Circulation Department to fille the form in person. You can borrow up to 5 books for 30 days with this protocol form and if the book is not hold by another user can renew the borrowing period once.

    For other libraries in Ankara and elsewhere in Turkey, METU academic staff should apply to the ILL librarian by e-mail. Loan periods, maximum numbers of books, and maximum times of renewals vary by libraries. Please remember to check the library catalogue first to ensure that we don't already have the book(s).     Q: Is there a self-check machine in the Library?
    A: Yes, there is a kiosk machine at the entrance of the Library and you can borrow and return the books in general collection by using it. But if you have overdue books or 5 TL and more outstanding fine on your account, you need to apply to Desk.

    Q: May I renew the books I have borrowed from Reserve without coming to the Library?
    A: No, you must come to the Library to renew the books you have borrowed from Reserve.

    Q: How long may I borrow textbooks from Reserve?
    A: A type textbooks are for 3 hours loan; books borrowed after 04:00 pm must be returned before 11:00 am, the next day. B type textbooks are for 1 day, and C type textbooks are for 3 days loan.

    Q: What is the cost of delay in textbooks borrowed from Reserve?
    A: It costs 0.60 Kr per hour, and 14.4 TL per day.

    Q: May I renew the books I have borrowed after a few days?
    A: No, the earliest time for renewals is 3 days before the due date.

    Q: How many times may I renew the books I have borrowed?
    A: If the book has not been reserved by another user;

    • Academic and administrative staff, and PhD students may renew 3 times,
    • Undergraduate, graduate, and exchange students and DOSAP researchers, retired administrative/retired academic/part-time staff, and staff of Technopark and METU Foundation may renew 2 times,
    • Users with protocol may renew 1 time.


    Q: I can not reserve a book borrowed by another user. Why?
    A: If you have:

    • 5 TL or more outstanding fine on your account,
    • Overdue item(s) on your account,
    • Already 3 items that you have reserved, you cannot reserve any books.

    Q: What is a call number?
    A: A call number is an identifying number of a book to allow you to find the exact location of it. By this way readers can browse the books in a subject field together. Letter(s) in a call number indicate(s) to the main topic, and number(s) indicate(s) to the subtopic.

    Q: What do the expressions in the "Location" field on the catalog mean?
    A: Please click here for the locations and the terms of use of the collections in the “Location” field of the Library Catalog.

    Q: What do the expressions mean in the "Status" field on the catalogue?
    A: • AVAILABLE: The item is in the Library. If it is not on the shelf it can be on the tables, filing shelves, trucks or at the photocopy room.
    • DUE: The item is borrowed and should have been returned on the date given.
    • ON HOLD SHELF: The item has been reserved by a reader.
    • RESHELVING: It means the item has returned but not reshelved, yet. The reshelving period is approximately 4 hours. During this period it can most probably be on the filing shelves or trucks.
    • BINDING: The item is in binding process and cannot be used for a period of time.
    • LIB USE ONLY: The item can never be borrowed. You can take some photocopy from it.
    • IN PROCESS: The item is on order and has not been received by the Library, yet.

    Q: How can I view the items, holds, and fines on my account?
    A: You can view you account by clicking on My Record in the library catalog.

    Q: Can I search the Library Catalogue outside the campus?
    A: Yes. You just need a web browser and an internet connection to search our catalog.

    Q: How can I search the Library catalog?
    A: You can find information about catalog search in the presentation at Home>>Presentations for Users>>Guide for Effective Usage of Library Resources and in the video titled Catalog Search at http://videos.lib.metu.edu.tr/

    Q: What is the difference between the METUnique Search and the Library catalog?
    A: You can search both print and electronic resources in the Library collection at METUnique Search. Besides covering print collections METUnique Search also covers collections in the databases, whereas the Library catalog does not cover most of the electronic collections in the databases.

    Q: Can I add a comment in the Library catalog about a book in the Library collection?
    A: Yes. You can add your comments about books in the collection by clicking on the Add a Review link in the book records. You just need to enter your username and password you use for accessing to METUMail. You can also rate books with stars by choosing from “Click to choose a star rating” section on the same page.

    Q: Who may suggest books to the Library?
    A: METU students, academic and administrative staff may order books and other library materials.

    Q: How can I suggest a book?
    A: To order a book click on the "Recommend a Book / Textbook" form then fill in and submit the form.

    Q: What resources can I use for choosing books to order?
    A: You can use Global Books in Print and the web sites like Amazon etc. Moreover, you can select books from publisher catalogs.

    Q: How could I learn that my book suggestion/request has been received by you or not ?
    A: If you have filled in all necessary information in the book recommendation form "Recommend a Book / Textbook" , you will receive the reply which includes the result of evaluation of your request in the shortest time possible. The only condition for this process you should be the registered user of the library and your e-mail address should be valid.

    Q: May I donate books to the Library?
    A:  Please see the rules for book donation.

    Q: How long does it take to receive the ordered books?
    A: Public Tender Law is used for purchasing books. Therefore ordered books are come to the Library in approximately 4-6 months.

    Q: How can I suggest a print or electronic book for Library collection?
    A: Please fill out the Recommend a Book / Textbook form to suggest a book in electronic or print format. Please see Home>> Presentations for Users >> Guide for Recommending Books to the Library for help.

    Q: How could I learn that if the book could not be provided by the library?
    A: If the book has not been provided by the book provider company (on the conditions, which it is out of date, or not published yet, or the company has not been able to provide it due to some other reasons), we send you an e-mail which explain all the circumtances for your request.

    Q: How could I learn when the book has arrived in library?
    A: Immediately upon the library receives the book from the publisher we complete the technical process of the book, put a hold notice on your name and send an e-mail to your valid e-mail address which informs you about the arrival of the book.

    Q: What is the meaning of ISBN and ISSN ?
    A:  There is a unique international standard number for each book and for each title of serial publications. ISBN (International Serial Number of Books) stands for the books. ISSN (International Serial Number of Serials) stands for the serial publications.

    Q: How can I get information about database accession problems?
    A: Please send an e-mail to Electronic Resources Department or call (+90.312)2102786 or (+90.312)2102798 for accession problems to databases.

    Q: How can I learn whether the journal I am looking for available in the Library or not?
    A: Select the "Title" option from the first menu in the Library Catalog; write the periodical's name you're looking for in the blank; select the "Main Library Serials" option from the second menu, then click on the "Submit" button.

    Q: How can I get the journals I've found as a result of my search?
    A: If you're looking for current issues, get the call number from the Library Catalog and find it in the Current Periodicals' Hall. If you're looking for issues published after 2013, find it in the Periodicals' Hall in alphabetical order by title. Please fill in the stacks request form for the volumes belong to 2012 and before.

    Q: How can I access to the journals which I've found as a result of my search in a Bibliographic database?
    A: Please check the availability of journals in our collection with E-Journals' Search Page and the Library Catalog. For those that are not available in both, check within the Union Serials Catalog. You can view periodical holdings in Bilkent, Gazi, Hacettepe, METU, and ULAKBIM Libraries within the Union Serials Catalog.     A: No. Please check the electronic journals' list .

    A: You can search articles in the METUnique Search page. This page is only for METU members' use. The other users need to come to the Library for article searches.

    Q: How can I search for Turkish articles?
    A: You can search for Turkish articles in the "Bibliography of Articles in Turkish Periodicals" published by the National Library of Turkey.

    Q: Do you make article searches for us?
    A: No, we don't. However, when you come to the Library, any librarian in the Reference Department or Serials & E-Resources Department can explain and show how to search for articles.

    Q: Do you run training sessions in order to teach using electronic resources?
    A: Yes, during terms we hold training sessions for academic staff and students.     Q: How can I find book reviews and discussions related to my subject?
    A: You can find book reviews and discussions in the Web of Scienceand EBSCOHost databases.

    Q: What is the Citation Index? How can I make a search in the Citation Index?
    A: The Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI®) provides access to current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts, and cited references found in 8.628 of the world's leading scholarly science and technical journals covering more than 176 disciplines.
    The Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI®) provide access to current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts, and cited references found in over 3.125 of the world's leading scholarly social sciences journals covering more than 56 disciplines. You can search Citation Indexes in the "Web of Science" database in the Databases A-Z List.


    Q: Where can I find master theses and dissertations completed in METU?
    A:  Master theses and dissertations completed in ODTÜ are located in the repository. Print versions of theses are for in-library-use only. Theses can not be borrowed by Interlibrary Loan (ILL) but they can be photocopied and sent if the author permits. Theses finished after 2003 are also available electronically and the ones permitted by the authors are available on the internet. Accessibility of an electronic thesis belongs to the author's permission. Please visit the theses search guide  at Guides for Library Users page before starting to search for theses.

    Q: Where can I find master theses and dissertations made around the world?
    A: Citations and abstracts for doctoral dissertations and some master theses, from North American colleges & universities and some accredited international universities can be accessed from 1861 via Dissertations and Theses database. Full texts are available from 1997 to date.

    Q: Where should I submit my thesis? Where should I fill in the submission form?
    A: You need to submit both soft and hard copies of your thesis to the Reference Department. For your thesis to be available electronically, you need to fill in the e-thesis submission form anywhere in the campus. Please visit the User Training page for the electronic copy preparation guide.

    Q: Why are you still continue print journal subscriptions? Do you have any plans to access to the electronic versions of all your print journals?
    A: Yes, we have a policy about transition to the electronic versions of print journals and in accordance with this policy, every year we cancel some print journal subscriptions and subscribe to the electronic versions.

    Q: Is it possible to access the full texts of all search results that I make on METUnique Search?
    A: No, it is not. Please check the Library catalog if the print version of it is available in the collection.

    Q: Why I cannot download an electronic book entirely, at a time?
    A: Access format to electronic books is determined by suppliers or publishers. Therefore, electronic books can be downloaded chapter by chapter or they can be read only on the monitor as a certain time.

    Q: Where is the location to submit my master/doctoral thesis?
    A:  The location to submit your master/doctoral thesis is at the entrance floor of the library, called as Acquisition and Cataloguing Department.

    Q: Does the Library supply articles and books from abroad?
    A: We don't have a service of supplying articles from abroad. Such requests are met by TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM.

    Q: Does the Library supply articles and books from another universities in Turkey?
    A: The Library supplies articles and books from other universities in Turkey for METU faculty and staff via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. Also, full time staff in other universities in Turkey may supply articles and books from METU Library in the same way. Details...     Locations

    Q: Where can I find current periodicals?
    A: The current issues of the periodicals are located in the Current Periodicals' Hall by subject B Block on 1st Floor. If you know the journal's title, find it's call number in the Library Catalog and find it in the Current Periodicals' Hall with this call number.

    Q: Where can I find bound periodicals?
    A: Bound periodicals are shelved Block B on 1st Floor in the Periodicals Hall and in the Stacks. Please find volumes belong 2013 and afterwards in the Periodicals Hall. For the volumes belong 2012 and before you need to fill in the "Journal Stacks Request Form".

    Q: Where can I make an article search in the Library?
    A: You can make it in the Serials & E-Resources Department and in the Reference Department.

    Q: Where can I find master theses and dissertations completed in METU?
    A: Master theses and dissertations completed in ODTÜ are located in the repository and served by Reference Department. Find the thesis in the library catalog and fill in the REQUEST FROM STACKS form. Please keep in mind that you can request from the repository only the theses not available electronically. You can access the electronic copy of any thesis by clicking on the ‘Connect to’ link. If access to the electronic copy is forbidden, it means also the print copy is forbidden.

    Q: Is there a special section for quick access to current and literary books?
    A: Yes, current books like novels, poems, etc. can be found in Popular Books section on the 3rd floor.


    Photocopying, Scanning, and Printout

    Q: Can I get printout in the Library?
    A: Yes, you can get printout in the fotocopy room in the entrance of the Library. Black and white printout costs 4 Kr/page, and colour printout costs 50 Kr/page; black and white printout to acetate costs 40 Kr/page, colored printout to acetate costs 1 TL.

    Q: Can I get photocopy and scan in the Library?
    A: Yes, you can get both of them in the photocopy room in the entrance of the Library. Black and white photocopy costs 4 Kr per page, colour photocopy costs 50 Kr per page, and A4 page scanning costs 10 Kr per page.

    Q: What should I do when I need any information about the Library?

    A: Most databases have online user guides. You can view them by clicking on the "Help" button in the database interfaces.     Q: What should I do in order to arrange a library tour for my students?

    A: You can direct your questions about the Library to the librarians at Reference desk.

    Q: Is there an online chat service in the Library?
    A: Yes, there is an online chat service from 8:45 to 17:15 in the Library. Please use Ask a Librarian on the right side of the web page for your questions.

    Q: I am not a METU member. Can I access your electronic collections in the Library by registering my devices like laptop, iPad and/or mobile phone to the wireless network?
    A: Yes, after we register your devices to the wireless network you can access to the electronic collections of the Library. Please apply to librarians at Reference desk with your ID card.

    Q:  What can I do if I lost something at the Library?

    Forgotten personal belongings are held in the lost & found lockers at the library until closing time. Forgotten personal belongings of value (laptop, tablet PC, mobile phone, personal bag, wallet, etc.) are delivered to the On-duty Authority in the Office of Domestic Services at closing time. Other belongings (clothing, stationery, keys, etc.) are safe kept throughout the academic year by the building administrator. At the end of the each academic year, belongings of small or no value are sent out for recycling.
    For forgotten personal belongings, you may contact with Library Building Administrator. Administrator office is on the ground floor, next to the Photocopy Room. You may also call 210 27 92 or send an e-mail to lib-hot-line@metu.edu.tr.

    Q: How can I view PDF files?
    A: You need an Acrobat Reader application to view PDF files. Simply double-clicking a PDF file icon or clicking a Web URL for a PDF file will launch the program. For your own computer, you can download Acrobat Reader from Adobe's Web site.

    Q: Where can I buy a CD-ROM in the Library?
    A: You can I buy a CD-ROM in the photocopy room at the entrance of the Library.

    Q: May I use my own computer in the Library?
    A: Yes, you can use your own computer via wireless network in the Library. Please register first.

    Q: Could I get a part-time job in the Library?

    Rules for Being a Part-Time Student

    1. Students with an adequate GPA, and who have not taken any disciplinary action could be employed as part-time students. GPA must be minimum:

    • 2,00 for undergraduate students, and 3,00 for graduate students.
    • There is no GPA obligation for preparatory students, and first year students in either undergraduate or graduate programs. But  students in preparatory program must be registered for the fist time.

    2. Part-time students are employed at the beginning of the academic year, according to the budget and need.

    3. In case of need, students employed in fall semester can continue to work in spring semester and next academic year. 

    4. Maximum working time is 15 hours a week and 60 hours a month. (ÜYK - 10 November 2009 - 2009/41-5)

    5.As of 15 February 2014, gross wage is 5,80 TL per hour for preparatory and undergraduate students, and 7,50 TL per hour for graduate students. (ÜYK 15 Şubat 2014 - 2014/4)

    6. Part-time students are required to select one of the following time periods:

    • From 08:45 to 17:30 or from 17:30 to 23:00 in weekdays,
    • From 09:00 to 21:00 in weekends.

    ** Foreign students can not be employed in accordance with the legislation.

    Q: If I have a problem with a credit card payment, who do I call in the Library?

    Q: Is my online transaction secure?
    A: Yes, METU Library is using an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate for all web pages. This is a method of encryption which encodes data sent over the Intranet and is designed to allow only the intended recipients to receive the information in a readable format. Moreover, With 3D secure are added an extra level of security for Visa and MasterCard payments, which protects you from the unauthorized use of your credit card.

    Q: What if I need a refund?
    A: You should come library and meet with circulation desk. If you paid your debt and you want to cancel your payment in the same day, you can be returned your payments. If you want to cancel your past payments, you can be returned a part of your payments for a one-time only.

    Q: Will I get a receipt?
    A: If you want to get a receipt, you should come to library.

    Q: How soon after payment is my debt removed?
    A: Your debt automatically is removed with your payment.

    Q: How do I pay online?
